BARNEYS NEW YORK | AN ICON, A LEGEND
Barneys will forever live in the NYC cultural psyche. A big beautiful luxury retail space – embodying a mix of uptown chic + downtown cool. Situated in the UES, our in-house design team worked alongside a rich roster of collaborators including artists (Alex Katz, Patti Smith), metalworkers, fashion photographers (Juergen Teller, Bruce Weber), the creators of South Park, Stefan Sagmeister, Christie’s Auction House, and many many more. Working on the branding, in-house magazines, campaigns, store windows + events - with this calibre of artistic collaboration - was an immensely invaluable experience.

VISUAL IDENTITY + ETHOS
Cultivating the Barneys visual ID meant balancing the prestige of a longstanding brand with modernity and cultural awareness. This was done through artful experimentations in custom typography, photography, campaigns and experiential installations. This integration of art + culture in every touchstone of the brand was world-building + ‘rich’ beyond the strictly financial sense.
THE WINDOW
‘The Window’ – Barneys’ in-house magazine was a fun weirdo process-driven exploration in creating experimental type and compelling photo direction. The typography wasn’t just “poured out of a can” it was massaged, tweaked, romanced and in-conversation with the imagery.
STORE WINDOWS
Working on the Barneys store windows was truly a fashion girl’s dream come true. They weren’t strictly a matter of configuring static mannequins. The Hood by Air windows featured life-size hyper-real recreations of models from the Paris runway. Complete with bedazzled dental dams and all. For the Baz Luhrman + Catherine Martin holiday windows they featured live figure skaters, ice sculptors and a break-dancing elf. Alex Katz’ installation featured larger than life paintings reflecting the audience of the street passerbys. It was pure fantasy.
